Legend of the Seeker Fandom Enters New round of Efforts to Revive Cancelled Fantasy TV Show
Legend of the Seeker audience members know no bounds for their passion. In SciFi fandom’s latest plan to revive the syndicated fantasy show, Legend of the Seeker fans are calling upon the People’s Choice Awards to help recruit new fans for the show. Such an idea has long odds although Seeker fans have established an impressive track record for grabbing people’s attention.
Produced by Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert the Seeker wasn’t sunk for low viewership so much as the Tribune Company’s financial woes. Commanding one third of Seeker viewership, Tribune shut off eight hundred thousand viewers. Tribune’s decision was a mortal blow and ABC Studios never offset the damage. After a brief attempt to recruit the SyFy network ABC pulled out of the show. Audience members were humiliated. Fan groups had contributed tens of thousands of dollars for trade publication ads. Fan-made videos appeared on YouTube.
Obsessing with saving the Seeker has become an international passtime. Fans in countries around the world are contributing materials and money, organizing convention activities, and otherwise ignoring ABC’s retreat from the business.
Organizing a world-wide campaign takes a lot of resources, but major LoTS Websites are proving they are up to the task. And they have a little help: Xenite.Org’s scifi publicity machine has announced OPERATION LOTS MORE, a pro bono publicity campaign designed to publicize Seeker fan activities. By publishing press releases such as Legend of the Seeker Fans Rally Around People’s Choice Awards and DvD Sales to Save Their Show Operation LOTS More sustains the campaign’s visibility. Meanwhile, across the blogosphere news articles such as DVD Gives Fans Chance to Save ‘Legend of the Seeker’ help inspire new fans to join the struggle. Xenite’s Operation LOTS More doesn’t deserve all the credit — many professional journalists loved the show and have been encouraging the fans to keep working to bring it back.
ABC and Disney may have given up the struggle but 2,500,000+ watchers are still waiting to celebrate the third season of the Seeker’s expoits. Signs indicate the Seeker’s fans aren’t abandoning hope so it may be they’ll realize their wish. As all the contracts have finished writer Terry Goodkind may be in a better position to find an alternative solution. Legend of the Seeker adapted his Sword of Truth books. As more than one fan has put it: “There are two-point-five million reasons to do this show.”
